Last week, Multiquip, a diverse manufacturer and supplier of world class quality products and solutions, announced its introduction of the first hydrogen fuel cell powered light tower, part of a planned series of hydrogen fuel cell powered products. Their press release stated that the light tower, innovative by design, is environmentally friendly, fuel efficient, virtually pollution-free, allowing it to be operated indoors and can be operated for up to 50 hours at a noise level of 43 decibels at 23 feet.

Aerial work platform manufacturer Snorkel will be demonstrating its personal and low level access at The Rental Show 2011. Snorkel defines personal access as compact, portable lifts, generally designed to be used by one person and mainly for interior applications at heights under 40 ft. Low-level access is defined as machines under 12 ft. platform height and weighing less than 1,800 lbs.

On December 15, Caterpillar Inc. announced that it and the United Auto Workers (UAW) had begun negotiations for a new labor agreement. The current contract, ratified in 2005, will expire on March 1, 2011. The agreement covers approximately 9,500 production and maintenance workers at the company’s Illinois facilities in Aurora, Decatur, East Peoria, Mapleton, Mossville, Morton and Pontiac, as well as those in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Last week, Governor Jerry Brown released his 2011–12 plan to close an estimated $25 billion budget deficit. Calchamber's Alert Newsletter reported that the proposed budget calls for $12.5 billion in spending cuts, $13.8 billion in new taxes -- including a five-year extension of several taxes that were increased temporarily in 2009 -- and a realignment of responsibility and spending back to local governments.

According to a January 13 article on latimes.com, the California Online Poker Association is promoting legislation to legalize Internet poker. The proposal has been put into legislation pending in the California Senate. According to the group, which includes the Commerce Casino, Hawaiian Gardens Casino, Hollywood Park Casino and Indian tribes that operate card rooms including the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, this could help eliminate the $25-billion budget shortfall the state is currently facing.

An online post December 21 post from San Jose Mercury News reported on Skype's new CEO Tony Bates and his plans to diversify and broaden the company's revenue by attracting companies and big corporations to use Skype. Skype was legally separated from eBay late last year, has moved its offices into a large building in Palo Alto, and has an initial public offering in the works. However, the article states, the business faces a common problem of many new Internet services: converting a greater portion of its large user base into paying customers.

On January 15, the Air Resources Board posted a new fact sheet describing the December 2010 amendments to the in-use off-road diesel vehicle regulation. The fact sheet summarizes the off-road regulation and reflects the proposed amendments considered by the Board at the December 2010 Board Hearing. The amendments include pushing back the first compliance date to no earlier than January 1, 2014, for all fleets and making other significant changes.

The Off-Road Diesel Vehicle Regulation applies to all self-propelled off-road diesel vehicles over 25 horsepower used in California, except personal use vehicles, vehicles used solely for agriculture, vehicles that are awaiting sale (rental vehicles are not exempt), vehicles covered by the cargo-handling rule, or vehicles that can only be moved on rail.
