Survey Results: Employee Handbook

With all the changing regulations and requirements, CRA asked members to take a survey about employee handbooks. Here are the results.

1. Do you have an Employee Handbook?
Yes: 75.00% 21
No: 25.00% 7

2. What are your reasons for not having an Employee Handbook? (Check all that apply.)
a. Too expensive: 0% (no responses) 
b. Feel we don't need one: 14% (1 response)
c. Not enough time: 29% (2 responses)
d. Just family: 0% (no responses)
e. Other (please specify): 57% (4 responses)
-We have guidelines and forms that we have our new hires read and sign. We don't have a booklet that someone could call an Employee Handbook.
-Have a rough draft, need to implement.
-I have an MBA in human resource management. I would rather not put policies into writing and defer to California Labor Law.
Previous owner did not supply one. 

3. Additional comments for question two (3 responses):
a. If an employee wants access to our forms, we do have them available through our counter system. Any employee can read or print them as needed.
b. If CRA is looking to put together a handbook, excellent idea as I believe the smaller companies do not have them.
c. We are currently developing one. 

4. How did you acquire your employee handbook?
a. Produced in-house: 67% (14 responses)
b. Purchased or received from another source: 33% (7 responses)

5. Additional comments for question five (6 responses):
a. Our Employee Handbook is out of date. We are currently in the process of recreating and updating it. We have purchased the handbook creator from CalChamber to have a template to work from.
b. The best handbooks I have seen are from the companies of CRA board members.
c. Some plagiarizing.
d. Recently modified.
e. Used the CRA version as a model...personalized it from there.
f. Work in progress over the years. 

6. Who did you purchase or receive your employee manual from?
a. BBSI helped us when we were with them.
b. California Chamber of Commerce.
c. Specialty Tool and Fastener Distributors Association (STAFDA).
d. CRA Attorney Peter Sloan.
e. Software and we customize to our needs.
f. Several rental stores, combined parts and created one that fits our store.
g. CRA. 

7. Does your handbook have job descriptions?
Yes: 30% (6 responses)
No: 70% (14 responses)

8. How often do you review your employee handbook?
a. Every Year: 35% (7 responses) 
b. Every 2 Years: 5% (1 response)

We will have our new handbook reviewed by legal council. 

10. Would you be willing to share your handbook with CRA if we were to develop a generic handbook?
Yes: 76% (13 responses)
No: 24% (4 responses)
Your willingness to share your handbook with CRA to aid in the development of a generic handbook for CRA members is greatly appreciated.
