Budget Battle May Halt Construction; Caltrans: Won't Have Enough Money Pay Bills

"We have enough money to pay our August invoices. The September invoices could be in jeopardy," Caltrans spokesman Mark Dinger said.

Caltrans said $9.5 billion of current construction projects could be impacted. Another $3 billion in future projects are already impacted, either being held or are in jeopardy of being delayed because of the budget battle.

Making matters worse, if construction is shut down the financial impact on local economies could be significant.

"We have hundreds of people working here (Highway 50) every night. Those people won't have a job to go to if we have to halt construction payments," Dinger said.
